"Root canal" has become a scary term for dental patients to hear, but the benefits of the procedure and advances in dental technology have made it much less "scary".  This dental procedure is probably the most notorious, but one of the most common procedures performed in a dental office.  Although no one wants to have a Root Canal performed, local anesthetics and proper pain medication allow the procedure to be performed with little to no pain in most cases.

Why do I need a Root Canal?  A Root Canal is indicated when there is infection in the nerve or "root" of the tooth or the cavity has penetrated so deep into the tooth that it has invaded the nerve.  Dr. Gao may prescribe an antibiotic to see if the infection can remedy or attempt minor endodontic procedures to alleviate the pressure or infection prior to attempting the Root Canal.  If these measures are not successful, or the decay is too significant a Root Canal is performed.

Root Canal Therapy removes the nerve of the tooth and any decay in the tooth structure.  The internal chamber of the tooth where the nerve was removed is sealed and a material is placed to add tooth support.   There may be some soreness following the procedure, but that is normal for most dental procedures. Over the counter painkillers are usually enough to relieve any pain afterwards, but Dr. Gao may prescribe additional medication. The procedure will also relieve you from pain caused by the infection allowing you to enjoy all the foods you love without any pain from heat, cold, or biting too hard. If you are experiencing pain consult your dentist today.

After your Root Canal, a crown may be needed to ensure support of the tooth and prevent future fracturing of this tooth.
